Fiber optic, UV, CO2 laser marking machine differences

一、Working principle and laser characteristics

·Fiber laser marking machine

It uses a fiber laser with a laser wavelength of 1064nm (infrared band), which is transmitted through the fiber and then focused.
Features: Good beam quality, high energy density, high electro-optical conversion efficiency (30%~40%), low power consumption.

 

·UV laser marking machine

UV lasers, usually with a wavelength of 355nm (ultraviolet band), are cold source lasers.

Features: Directly destroy the molecular bonds on the surface of the material through photon energy, achieving "cold processing" and extremely small heat-affected zone.

 

·CO₂ laser marking machine

It uses a CO₂ gas laser with a wavelength of 10.6μm (far infrared band).
Characteristics: The surface of the material is vaporized or carbonized by laser energy, the heat-affected zone is relatively large, and the electro-optical conversion efficiency is low (about 10%).

 

二、Applicable materials

·Fiber laser marking machine

Good at marking metal materials (stainless steel, aluminum alloy, copper, gold, silver, etc.), as well as some high-hardness non-metals (such as ceramics, jade, hard plastics).

Not suitable for marking most organic materials (e.g. paper, wood).

 

·UV laser marking machine

Suitable for heat-sensitive materials such as plastics (PP, PE, PVC), glass, films, PCB boards, electronic components, food packaging, etc.
It can also mark metals, but the effect is not as obvious as fiber laser.

 

·CO₂ laser marking machine

It is mainly used for non-metallic materials, such as wood, paper, leather, cloth, acrylic, rubber, glass (surface coating), ceramics (surface glaze), etc.
Metal cannot be marked directly (unless there is a special coating on the surface).

 

三、Mark the effect

·Fiber laser marking machine

Permanent markings with high contrast (e.g. black and white / off-white) are marked with fine lines (up to 0.01mm) and strong wear resistance.
Examples: metal part numbers, tool security markings, jewelry lettering.

 

·UV laser marking machine

When marking plastic/glass, it presents light color marks (e.g. white/transparent colors), no burrs, no scorch marks, and smooth edges, suitable for high-precision patterns.
Examples: QR code for electronic components, logo for cosmetic packaging, marking for medical devices.

 

·CO₂ laser marking machine

Non-metallic marks are marked with dark (black/brown) marks, formed by vaporization of the material, and may have slight marginal carbonization.
Examples: carton production date, fabric pattern, acrylic signage.

Jewelry: Precious metal lettering, gemstone markings.

·UV laser marking machine

·CO₂ laser marking machine
